Between the ancient elegance of the cathedral cloisters and the bride's stunning rose-blush wedding dress, it was no wonder that a little girl visiting Norwich Cathedral stood open-mouthed as Jen turned the corner, and whispered, "Mummy, look, a princess!"
I was overjoyed to join this bride and groom - and their two flower girls - for their special day in the centre of our very fine city. Jen and Ben combined cosy intimacy with grand splendour in the making of their wedding; a day which, truly, had all the makings of a fairy tale.
The Maids Head is the oldest hotel in the UK, dating back over 800 years, and sits next to Norwich Cathedral in the city's historical Tombland. Morning preparations got underway with the bridal party enjoying breakfast champagne in the charming Surlingham Suite. (Beth and Molly, flower girls extraordinaire, preferred Robinsons Fruit Shoots...) As guests began to arrive, Jen revealed her dress to the girls, and suddenly it was time to meet Ben at the end of the aisle. The couple were married in the hotel's Oak Room Suite in an intimate ceremony, full of tears and laughter. Husband and wife, and their guests, walked to the cathedral for photographs in front of the spire, before the newlyweds and I took our own spin around the grounds - and quite literally stopped traffic on Elm Hill. Returning to the Maids Head, we were warm again in no time as the wedding breakfast was served after speeches from the groom and his best man.
I'm always grateful to the venue staff at the weddings I join, but special and sincere thanks are due to the folk at the Maids Head - in particular, Amy and the staff on the front desk - for saving me, quickly and discreetly, from not one but two minor disasters on the day. For duct tape, and access to your printer: my thanks. And finally, my wholehearted congratulations to Ben and Jen, Beth, and Molly. Thank you for having me do what I do, and for sharing your day with me.
